Overview:
I have a passion to not only perform music but also share with my students what I learned through my performance experiences. In 1994, I graduated from Asbury University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Piano Performance. In 1995, I graduated from the University of South Dakota with a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance. From February 2000 through June 2014, I have been a church organist at United Methodist Church in Romeo, MI, where I've only continued to learn about music. Following my move from Michigan to Watertown, SD, I became one of the church organists at Cornerstone United Methodist Church in Watertown, SD, where I am also currently a bell choir director since January 2015.
EXPERIENCE
Ever since 1990's, the decade I began teaching piano, I begin to understand that each student is unique, and learns music differently. As a result, the fun part comes trying to figuring out how to personalize lessons for each of my students. That means there are times when the available method books may not work out. But at the same time, the motivation and push is what will generally drive students to work hard. I also began teaching online piano lessons in the early 2000's. Students, who have a computer, laptop, or smartphones with a video camera, can connect with me. I don't charge for the first lesson as a way of introducing each other. If the student likes how I teach, then the subsequent lessons will be charged.
METHODS USED
I listen to the student's music selections. While he/she plays, I observe him/her how this student is adapting to the instrument. After his/her performance, I offer constructive criticism pointing out steps to adapt himself/herself to the instrument. I also encourage and push for attentive listening for tone quality. This is very important no matter the level of students. The way to listen for tone quality is not only seating straight and at the center of the keyboard, but also understand when and how to use the bony part of the fingers(closer to nails) versus the fleshy part of fingers on the opposite side of nails.
LESSON STYLE
I carefully watch and listen to my students' progress. If the material selection seems hard, I encourage him/her to take such material at a later time. Depending on the age of the student, I had students from those who looked up to me for guidance of music to those who set their own music goals. As a result, I adapted myself to the level and age of my students wishes and goals. Some students want to play Christmas songs. Other students want to perform in front of people. Others want to apply both activities. It really depends on what students want to accomplish. My job is to help them set those goals.
