It was an absolute blast working with my peers, having the opporunity to test out each other's compositions and ideas. I have always loved teaching and so a vast amount of my teaching has been in the form of informal lessons to my friends because I beleive that anyone can learn to enjoy playing music at any level. In between my two performance degrees, I took classes at UMass Lowell in education and was blown away by how innovative and helpful the program proved to be. Read More

Students learn best in a relaxed, nurturing environment.  I believe in order to successfully teach, I need to be encouraging, and truly care about the students.  My goal is to always have the students improve.  To do this, I think students need a well-balanced diet of tone (Moyse De la Senorite can be used), technique (scales for younger students, Maquarre Daily Excercises or Taffanel and Gaubert Daily Excercises for more advanced students), etudes (Melodious and Progressive Studies), and pieces (I consult the NYSSMA manual for appropriate pieces for the students level).  Having taken Alexander Technique, I strongly emphasize posture so that students can use their bodies in the most efficient way.  Individualized instruction allows for teachers to cater to the needs of the student, challenging the students without frustrating them.  Everyone is unique and learns at different rates, so no two lessons will ever be the same.  I teach students how to practice, so that they can progress outside of the 30 min. or hour long lesson.  As for performance standards, I have used rubrics for tone, technique, articulation, phrasing, and breathing.  Once strengths and weaknesses are assed, I create a plan to help the student improve, which is what students and teachers want to hear. It is very important that the student can enjoy playing while learning music. I assign long and short pieces, so students can mark their progress and accomplishments. I ease the challenge of learning new pieces through helping them to practice properly from the start. I instill good listening in the sound they play and how they play. Students are initiated into the world of motifs, patterns, phrasings and musical structures for musical appreciation. Read More

I consider myself a laid back teacher who still has solid expectations. I understand that each student's feasible time commitment may be different and I would like to honor that. With that said, I expect my students to put time into their music, because that is the only way to make progress and to maximize their ultimate enjoyment of playing an instrument. I will set realistic weekly goals for each student, trying to balance their interests with my evaluation of what they need to work on to make the most progress. Read More

If, however, a student does not practice, I try to work with them in a positive manner to see if we can get to the root of the issue. I do not take a 'lecture style' approach as I find a lack of practice often has more to do with their fear than anything else. If I can help a student address their fears and help work them through it, more often than that this is what helps them move forward with their practice habits. Read More

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
