For me, the best part of teaching is helping students grow, and helping them realize their musical abilities and self-reliance. I feel that my role as a teacher is to present new information or challenges, and aid the student in learning how to address those challenges on their own. I find that this encourages the students to want to learn more and more to expand their own musical and technical literacy, and it makes them much more prepared for individual practice, ensemble playing, and future challenges where they have to rely on themselves. I include the parents as well in this conversation for the younger students, as I find that some parents want their children to learn how to read beginning at a young age. My 30+ years as Church Soloist and Music Director/organist included King and Chapel and Arlington St. Church/Boston, St Anthony of Padua (Litchfield), Our Lady of Sorrows(Hartford), Church of the Good Shepherd, (Hartford) St. John the Evangelist (Watertown), St Anthony (Prospect). I was very fortunate to receive 5 grants to research Fanny Mendelssohn, Amy Beach, and Barbara Strozzi, resulting in feature journal articles, publication of 60 scores, and lecture/recitals throughout the world including Venice, Boston, and New York. I'm an enthusiastic, energetic, kind and dedicated music instructor. As passionate as I am about music, I am even more so about the students I teach. I graduated from the University of Connnecticut, Storrs, with a Bachelor of Science in Music Education in 1972, and a Master of Music degree, with a concentration in Piano Pedagogy in 1980. As an undergraduate my major instruments were piano and trombone. I was in the UConn Marching Band and had the great fortune to perform on my trombone in Europe during the 1970 Marching Band Tour.
