I have been teaching musicians of all ages and levels ever since my first year of undergraduate in 2016. I have been contracted every summer since then by Summer Sonatina, a piano camp in Bennington, VT, to teach five to six 45 minute lessons a day. While I do teach at all levels, I tend to gravitate more towards serious intermediate-advanced students. Therefore, it’s important that each student progresses at his or her own pace, I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a student’s desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. A method I use to encourage my student’s progress is to give them stars for when they work on their assignment; the stars they earn will allow the student to choose a song of their choice that is not from the same genre being studied—this may be a pop song. As basic techniques are acquired and musical concepts are grasped, I tailor the lesson to what the students long term goals are.
