My process is based on (but does not adhere strictly to) the Classical approach to Western tonal harmony and asks that the students develop certain fundamentals of technique and theory.  In my experience, this structure creates the strongest foundation for pupils to build the rest of their musical lives on, whether professionally or solely for personal enjoyment.  All of my students are on the fast track to studying music theory. I give all of my students a mixture of technical exercises, repertoire pieces, and creative assignments to keep things interesting and varied. We will spend about half of the lesson on technique and theory, and the other half on understanding, and appreciating different musical styles and how to improvise comfortably and confidently over them. I have a much heavier focus on songwriting, and composing than most teachers, and I encourage my students to be as creative as possible while giving them the tools to do so effectively and correctly. My teaching experience dates back to the spring of 2004, shortly after graduating from college. Early on in my career as an instructor, I found the best overall approach to teaching was to encourage consistent practice, coupled with a strong emphasis on good technique and developing good habits. Maintaining a consistent lesson schedule as well as continuity between lessons is critical. My experience with teaching has also taught me that as an instructor, you can't always be a disciplinarian. Motivation can be the biggest issue for the students. There is always a boredom element when practicing the same thing over and over again; so i like to add some spontaneity and life to practice sessions. I'll slide in an improvised solo while the student is strumming chords or teach the student little melodies within the scale. and I'll end the sessions playing through an entire song or exercise with the volume cranked up! Depending on the age and personality, I cater each lesson to the individual. If they are younger students, I'll use Mel Bay or Hal Leonard books, but sometimes I will make a custom book that builds with their development and learning style. I believe reading sheet music is important, but understand that being able to play along with other musicians using ear training and improv skills, as well as reading chord charts, is just as necessary. I believe in shaping a lesson around the student. First, I find out what the student wants to focus on more, whether it is notation and musical theory, or learning a few basic chords, strumming patterns and such, to be able to play their favorite songs. No matter their ability, this method of teaching is effective because I find that it keeps the students interested and engaged. A mix of theory and technique is always encouraged, but ultimately, I create the lessons around what the student wants. Read More
