I've had to teach four to six instrument parts to the band mates for a single song. Stopping a jam to nail down a part can be frustrating and slow the momentum of a jam session, but I've always felt it is imperative to keep everyone knowledgeable and in pocket. So in my music teaching experience, I've learned to keep a positive and patient vibe. There are always little humps to get over when learning new instruments or material, but encouragement will lead to big reward once the new skill is ingrained properly. Read More

I like to get to know my students so that I can tailor the lessons and materials to their own interests. We have a mostly informal interaction, but I point out ways to improve playing at each lesson. I enjoy watching a student make progress and help celebrate when a particular goal is reached (such as the completion of a lesson book or the mastering of an important piece). Generally my lessons are enjoyable for both of us, and I strive to use praise more than criticism. Read More

I grew up in Stephens City, VA, where I started playing drum set professionally at age 16. Piano, guitar, and songwriting came soon after, and in 2005 I was awarded the Jazz Studies Scholarship from the University of North Texas to study drum set with the world-renowned educator, Ed Soph. At North Texas, I participated in the 6 O'Clock Lab Band, Advanced AfroCuban Ensemble, Chamber Brass Band and Brazilian Ensemble, and soon after, was commissioned to compose original music for the computer game Wriggle Words.. My teaching style is to be sensitive to each student. Each person has a different relationship and understanding of music. I try to identify and accommodate the ways in which the student learns best. Some students need explicit instruction and to be pushed, others need gentle guidance with time and space to work things out for themselves. A student's personality and ambitions will inform whether they need a relaxed environment or a more assertive variety of instruction. Read More

Also a student of world-famous flutists James Galway, Julius Baker and Jean-Pierre Rampal, I have been teaching music since 1974, in addition to performing professionally throughout the United States, Canada and the Caribbean.
