For beginning level students of any age, I will begin lessons by going over basic fundamentals of sheet music reading (notation, connecting the instrument to the literature) and music theory that will aid them in accomplishing homework tasks independently. For experienced students, I will ask the student to demonstrate knowledge and playing to their best ability to obtain a better understanding of where to continue their studies. I will also ask all students what kind of music they are already studying and what else they would like to pick up from there (studying classical contemporary for school band with an interest in starting jazz music, etc.) I will always consider the students age and playing level to appropriately create lesson plans that will ensure growth over time. I have taught privately since 2006, though occasionally I will take two students from the same household, church or neighborhood and pair them up in what is known as a "partner lesson". Each person takes turns at the piano playing their respective scales, repertoire etc. and we offer one another encouragement as well as constructive criticism for those technical issues in need of improvement. I do hold seasonal recitals during Christmas and spring seasons as an outlet for my students to showcase the songs and pieces they have learned throughout the year. Read More

I've played piano since I was six and have loved music for many years. My wish is to spread such love for music and hopefully inspire my students in the future. I will graduate with a Bachelors of Music from the College-Conservatory of Music in the University of Cincinnati in December. I've had many performance opportunities from accompanying choirs of all ages, to singing in mixed ensembles for my peers, to singing in ensembles for nursing homes. Read More

I love watching them grow and learn through varied ways of instruction. I find that a combination of ways to motivate students to practice as well as learn music theory works best. From having log books to keep up with practice time, to flash cards to help with music theory I incorporate many methods so that students learn all they need to but do not get bored in the process. I use multiples methods. One of them is the Susuki method. I consider that is a good method for beginners with a lot of techniques exercises and also includes pieces. For me it is essential that a student learn first all the techniques exercises and then start to create music. After that I started to teach how to respect the essential aspects in a piece: the fingering, the bowing, the dynamics, the tempo and others. Read More

My teaching style is based on 3 of my core beliefs. (1) The student is the most important person in the class ( This is why I do not force a particular method on every student. I adapt to each student's learning style). (2) Music should be fun ( This is why I chose music that the student can relate to ) (3) Every task can be easy or difficult. Every single task has a pattern that, if you know it, makes the task very easy. ( This is why I reveal these patterns to my students and these patterns make them learn easily, naturally and rapidly)(Most of my beginner students learn to play a complete song with both hands in their very first lesson------Why?------PATTERNS ). I find that the key to enjoyable lessons is to discover just the right sort of pieces a student likes to play. No one likes having to practice something they think is boring. It is with this in mind that I also incorporate games and flash cards and activities involving action for the little ones who can't sit long on a piano bench. I make sure we use ALL the keys of a piano from one end to the other, and the black ones too. Read More

When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
Mostly gradually from the time I was 16 when I auditioned for my first organ position. It was so cool. The priest was the first who encouraged me to continue and make time to practice after school and he would take me home. I could stay for supper with them but I didn't have to. I loved the attention and love they gave me so I usually stayed then he drove my home.
If you play more than one instrument, how did you decide to start playing the second? (Or 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc)!
I did select another instrument, cornet because I had the correct lips and jaw for that instrument, Dr. Centrone was the band leader at school and I love at the precision of the marching band. I loved being in the band/
Does music run in your family? Tell us a little about your musical family members.
In my mother's side of the family. Mostly piano and singing. I was the only one who was in the band. I was not encouraged to play and sing with them too much as it was their family who sang and played following our holiday meals. I listened and I must say clowned around. Mostly cause I was jealous and mad they didn't include me.
What is your favorite style/genre of music to play and why?
My favorite genre is probably classical. I find all of the classic giants very predictable however, solid in their goals and objectives. I used to listen to the instrumentation and the orchestration and loved that part of the writing. I never liked individual melody writing but I could always suggest instruments that would feature the melody.
If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
I have no idea because from the time I was being potty trained my Mom tells the story that I sang all the while I was being trained. And when I went to school, I just wanted to sing and hear the piano accompaniment. I don't ever remember thinking of any other occupation. It was always music.
What is your dream piece to perform and why?
The Moonlight Sonata and I have it close to performance ready. I love the ebb and flow of the dynamics and the low sounding melody with accompaniment even lower.
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
My degree is in Music Education. I didn't select performance cause that isn't my area of expertise. I like the "nuts and bolts" of the piece making it more of an educational excercise.
What does a normal practice session look like for you?
I warm up on scales and a few Hanon exercises, Then I isolate the most difficult passages and practice those before putting the entire piece together. I am usually at the piano or organ for 2-3 hours.
Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
I usually select the method due to a childhood reason, For instance one student because they like to color, some like the duets, some like the melodic songs so each will vary by student. It helps me to stay alert, stay fresh, and I like variety.
