Theory and sightreading is introduced on day-one, and emphasized in every lesson going forward. All of my beginning piano students will be learning the five finger scales and hand placement. I will always integrate advanced theory techniques when teaching my students because I believe that this will be beneficial in the long run as they progress to intermediate and advanced levels. For advanced students, they will be expected to learn the notes on their own as per the standard of that level so that the lessons can be focused on artistry, performance etiquette, and interpretations. I am a multi-instrumentalist, having played piano (classical and pop/rock/blues and more) for 25 years, guitar and vocals for 17 years, and various other instruments including mandolin, banjo, blues and folk harmonica, bass guitar, 12-string guitar for over 10 years. I studied music and theory since age 5 all the way through the university level. I have taught professionally starting in 2014. I also compose songs, and love playing out. For beginning level students of any age, I will begin lessons by going over basic fundamentals of sheet music reading (notation, connecting the instrument to the literature) and music theory that will aid them in accomplishing homework tasks independently. For experienced students, I will ask the student to demonstrate knowledge and playing to their best ability to obtain a better understanding of where to continue their studies. I will also ask all students what kind of music they are already studying and what else they would like to pick up from there (studying classical contemporary for school band with an interest in starting jazz music, etc.) I will always consider the students age and playing level to appropriately create lesson plans that will ensure growth over time.
