Depending on the level and age of the student we will spend anywhere from a third to half of the lesson working on vocal exercises, which will aid in the student's foundation of developing a strong technical background. I have the most experience teaching young students (about 7 years old) who have had no experience or instruction in music. In such a case, I start with the fundamentals of music (how to read music), theory, and keyboard skills.
