I believe that all students should be self-motivated, and if they are lacking in discpline and consistency, I help them get re-centered and rouse their enthusiasm again so that they can approach practice with enthusiasm and curiosity rather then appraoching like it is a chore. If they are younger students, I'll use Mel Bay or Hal Leonard books, but sometimes I will make a custom book that builds with their development and learning style. I believe reading sheet music is important, but understand that being able to play along with other musicians using ear training and improv skills, as well as reading chord charts, is just as necessary. For flute beginning students, I usually start with the Essential Elements. Once the student has grasped the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their skill level. For flute intermediate to advanced students, I try to find out what the student is interested in, what they have previously worked on, and what their goals are musically. I like to focus on fundamentals such as extended scales in various patterns, etudes geared towards development of a specific technical aspect, and solo repertoire containing these fundamentals.
