For children I usually like to teach out of Hal Leonard's Guitar Method 1 and occasionally include songs they like/know as a reward for good work. For adults, it varies depending on their experience level and interests. When I teach, I try to teach not only how to physically play certain parts, but also how to think about music-- how the guitar player arrived playing that, why it works, and how to adopt similar things into one's own playing. For beginning students I like to start with proper technique and basic music theory such as reading music and key signatures. Once the student is comfortable with the instrument we will begin to work or more advance techniques and music theory. I use various instructional books depending on the students level and interest in order to teach them theory and keep them interested and enjoying learning. For adults, I like to find out what their goals with music are, whether it is just a hobby, or something they plan on doing professionally and how in depth they are looking to learn, and then guide my instruction accordingly. I start the student first by using The Mastery book by William Dick and Laurie Scott to learn the basic technique of the instrument. As soon as I think the student is ready I start teaching simple songs by rote. For students who are young children, I like to start working on fundamental musical and singing concepts, including posture, breath management, pitch matching, music literacy, and expression. I work with each student to find songs which are appropriate for their voice, and songs they are excited about working on.
