Instruments: Piano Guitar Voice

As I mentioned, I believe creativity should be encouraged. I am okay with any pace the student goes at, however I will still hold them to a high standard in terms of effort put in. I try and make each lesson fun and enjoyable, as well as a creative experience that still focuses on theory and fundamentals. I generally tend to split the lessons up into warm up techniques, repertoire, sight reading, listening/dictation, discussing music the student likes/wants to learn, and improvisation and songwriting. I believe that everyone has their own speed to accomplish their goals. I know how hard to keep practicing and performing from my own experience. However I want them to experience the satisfaction of accomplishment which only the players can experience. That's why I am very patient and supportive of every step a student takes and needs no matter how long or how hard it takes. I believe that everyone can enjoy learning piano and share the power of music which is the soul food for every human being. Read More

I am a fairly tough teacher: I expect my students to practice, regardless of their ability level. I believe firmly in scales, etudes and technique! I love watching my students figure out how these abstract skills translate into learning music!I use a few different method books for children, depending on theirlearning styles. For adults, I tailor my techniques to their interests and abilities, making it more interesting. Read More

My teaching method is based primarily on helping my students develop the skills needed to understand the language of music so that then they can create performances that are compelling and fulfilling to both the audience and themselves. I do not believe in a one-size-fits-all approach, and prefer to tailor my methods to the needs and goals of the student. For beginning piano students I tend to gravitate towards Faber's Piano Adventures to help us work and develop the fundamental skills. Read More

I normally use the Standard of Excellence method books for most of my students; however, I am open minded to adjusting to each individual student's musical needs, whether it be Jazz, Classical, or whatever style music the student is focusing on. For Drummers, I prefer the Haskell Harr Method, or the Buddy Rich Method Book, as well as the Breeze Easy Method Book. For piano instruction, I prefer the Faber Piano Method Books, as they are tailored to the students' individual needs. Read More

I teach strictly by the John Thompson Book Series, Grade 1, Grade 2, and Advanced level. I also make it a goal for the student to learn one major classical piece throughout the course of instruction: "Fur Elise" by Beethoven, or "Moonlight Sonata: 1st Movement" by Beethoven. You will learn how to sight-read and also how to notate. If you want learn how to write your music I can help with that too. Read More

I have been a music teacher since 1972, teaching classroom music, as well as being a Choir and Band Director, in Vernon, Glastonbury and West Hartford. Especially popular were my guitar and music of the theater classes. I have also directed various musicals on the Middle School level, such as You're a Good Man, Charlie Brown, Fiddler on the Roof, Babes in Arms, Oliver and others. At times, I even accompanied the shows on piano as I directed! Read More
