Bachelor Degree: Western Connecticut State University
I am a passionate elementary school music educator who can "technically" play most instruments but trumpet was first in my heart when started playing it in 4th grade! I continued with it growing up and all the way through college where I graduated with a bachelor of science in music education K-12. I am currently in my 7th year of teaching elementary general music, chorus, & beginner band. I love working with elementary students during their group lessons for band, however, I also enjoy working on higher level trumpet material for middle or high school students who want to prepare for auditions or improve their playing throughout school or their personal music journey!
My teaching experience dates back to my days growing up as a boy scout and through musical leadership roles throughout my schooling. My inspiration in becoming a music teacher stems from teaching how to tie different knots on a camping trip and my love for playing trumpet. I love the art of teaching and the learning process. I am currently on my 7th year of professional level teaching for general music, chorus and band. From my college and professional career, I can teach beginner level strategies for most instruments, and intermediate/advanced for trumpet players for all ages ranges.
For beginning students who are children, there are multiple method books I have worked with like Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or Accent on Achievement. These books are great for children to get started with the basics and work on their technical study. For adults, they could use those same methods books or the goal would be to find what the students interests are and explore different materials around that. At the end of day, music should be fun! My teaching methods encompass making musical growth fun, yet challenging so that students can grow in their skills but also enjoy the learning process!
Music is fun and music makes us human. My style of teaching is built around the exploration of how music is fun at all skill levels and everyone can learn it, enjoy it, and feel it. The best method of teaching music is whatever best fits with the student pursuing their musical goal. For some, that can be very hands on, and others that can be all by ear training. My goal as a professional educator is to figure out how students learn and apply different methods to help them grow in their skills and teaching them how to practice these skills on their own! I've used methods from Kodály, Orff, Suzuki, and Dalcroze throughout my ensemble teaching experience.
