With each new student, I assess their abilities and goals. From this information, I will make a decision reagrding which method I will use to teach the students their instrument. As lessons progress, the curriculum becomes more challenging. Depending on each students abilities and goals, I will most likely one of the following methods: Faber, Alfred, John Thompson, or Suzuki. In addition to teaching students how to play their instrument, each of these methods include supplemental theory materials, helping students to understand the language of music, which helps them become even better musicians. For beginner students who are adults, I tend to begin with Alfreds Basic Adult All in One Course. It is a wonderful book that teaches beginning theory and piano concepts at the perfect pace for adult students. As we progress through the book together, I begin to give pieces such as Clementis Sonatina in C (first movement). We start at a slower tempo and work each hand individually until the student is comfortable to try both hands. Read More

For beginning brass players, my favorite method for individual instruction in the "Breeze Easy" method, by John Kinyon. These books have fun and engaging entry-level pieces for students to play. Once students have gone through each book and developed certain fundamental skills, I will encourage them to move on to more advanced books such as the Arban's "Complete Method", and Robert Getchell's "2nd Book of Practical Studies". Arban's has a great combination of fundamental exercises such as scale studies and vocalizes, but also has entertaining solos and duets toward the back of the book. Read More

Having fun as one learns their craft is of the utmost importance. Therefore it is my goal to incorporate as much material that is relevant to the student's personal tastes and goals as possible. It's also rewarding to help a student discover something new that they love! Read More

My teaching experiences started shortly after I started playing. My younger brother, Joe. wanted to learn to play so I taught him basic chords as well as how to play rudimentary bass guitar. He stayed with bass for a year or so then went totally to guitar, eventually becoming a touring musician for several years, owned a music store and recorded with Christopher Cross, Molly Hatchett, Irons in the Fire and others. Teaching for me began as a complete accident but the love for it has been undying ever since. At the Berklee Day Sessions Summer Program in 2011, I played in and directed ensembles of musicians aged 10-13. I bonded with a guitar player and on the day of the recital, got my first private instruction student for bass guitar. Since then, I have taught at the Boys and Girls Club of Blue Hill in Dorchester, MA and the Hamilton-Garrett Music and Arts Academy in Roxbury, MA. Read More
