ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

Bachelor Degree: Shawnee State University

Overview:

I am a highly passionate musician and teacher living in Charlotte, North Carolina. I graduated from Shawnee State University with a BFA in Musical Theatre Performance in 2018. Before that, I studied Choral Music Education at Ohio University. I have; extensively, studied classical voice, theatrical voice, piano, music theory, and composition. I’m currently working as a voice teacher, gymnastics coach, and a professional circus performer. I am a hand balancer and aerial straps artist. Before my circus career, I sang professionally in the Ohio, West Virginia, and Kentucky Tristate area. My last professional voice performance was in April 2019 as the tenor soloist for Handel’s Messiah.

EXPERIENCE

My teaching experience dates back to my time as an undergraduate. As a freshman in my music education program, I volunteered to be the music director and conduct the orchestra for a production of “The Addams Family” Musical. The show was put on by a student organization on campus. I taught all of the actors their music. Fast forward two years later. I transferred to Shawnee State University to study musical theatre. While there, I tutored several classmates in musical theatre, taught private piano lessons, and worked with several classmates on their voice pieces for our recital at the end of each semester. As the only student to play piano and have a classical background in voice, I was the go-to-guy when people needed help. After graduating, I worked as a choreographer for a local community theatre, I taught gymnastics (former gymnast of 8 years), and continued to work with students and friends in both voice and piano.

METHODS USED

For beginner students who are adults, I tend to begin with Alfred’s Basic Adult All in One Course. It is a wonderful book that teaches beginning theory and piano concepts at the perfect pace for adult students. As we progress through the book together, I begin to give pieces such as Clementi’s Sonatina in C (first movement). We start at a slower tempo and work each hand individually until the student is comfortable to try both hands. We gradually increase the tempo over the next several weeks. Pieces like that will be rehearsed at the end of each lesson after working through a few passages in Alfred’s book. At the beginning, I ask my adults what music they’re interested in learning. I like to gear my warmup exercises and cool down exercises towards that style and I always put aside a few minutes at the end to work on whatever music they desire.

LESSON STYLE

There is nothing better than making a difference in a student’s life. I believe that we learn far more when we are having fun, so I try to make my lessons as fun as possible! I tailor my lessons specifically to each student’s goals and needs and I always make sure to let them know how much they’re progressing. I give a lot of compliments because I believe that encouraging students yields far greater results than when a teacher yields a hammer. At the beginning of our time, I like to set goals with my students. As we progress, we revisit these goals to make sure we’re on track and to see if any of the goals have changed. Students should always learn at their own pace, not mine, so I don’t like to be too strict with these goals and progressions. It’s all about having fun and learning a new skill!

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
