I was brought up learning the Suzuki Method of Piano. This method has its benefits, but I also utilize other methods such as Faber's Piano Adventures or Clark's The Music Tree. Developing a good ear is essential when trying to express yourself musically. Piano technique is also essential when trying to execute what you want at the right moment. With an emphasis on technique and listening, I motivate my students to also read the music and to interpret the only source that is made available to them. Read More

I think my approach to teaching piano is highly individualized. What motivates one student will not necessarily motivate another. Brief example: I currently have a student who likes to give me really "hard" high-fives after he has accomplished something. While he is adorable and he will work really hard to give me that high-five; this wouldn't work on many other students. Whatever will inspire my student to practice is what I will provide whether that is praise or stickers. Read More

While Alfred's method also teaches position playing, it also dives into intervallic reading. Many true, albeit arranged, baroque, romantic, and classical piano pieces are featured without a lot of fluff and fanfare. This may be an ideal method for most of students. The Alfred method is featured in a variety of books, including an all-in-one piano course for children, a prep course, and a basic piano library, completely correlated and presented in progressive levels. Music is my passion, and I want to share it with others. I believe music makes us better, smarter. There are proven studies that show that children who study music are smarter, happier and more successful in life. Regardless of age, studying and making music gives us cognitive, physiological, emotional and behavioral benefits. It is an effective tool for keeping our brain young and sharp, and out heart happy! The methods I choose fora studentwill be individualized based on wherethat student is and wherethe studentwould like to go. I will select different methods for different kinds of learners. However, we will certainlybegin by looking atthe student'sinstrument and learning environment and evaluate the technique and knowledge of the student. We will also begin by discussing long term goals and setting clear short term goals in ear-training, sight-reading, performance as well as theory and composition. The keyboard is a great place to learnmusical fundamentals, especially for beginners because it is so easy to visualizeintervals and patterns. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. My philosophy is to practice, practice, practice. Read More

I love to sing and have a passion for music. I have been performing since I could walk. In the fall of 2012, I receive my degree from UNCG in music education. There I studied private voice for 3 years with Dr. Nancy Walker, former vice president of National Association of Teachers of singing. I also had the opportunity to sing with the University Chorale, Men's Glee, and also UNCG's all-male a capella group, Spartones. Read More
