Tabernacle Baptist Church/Choir director

TBC/Youth choir minister of music

Overview:

I am a motivated piano instructor. I enjoy teaching as well as learning what genre my student likes to play. I have been playing as a church musician since the age of 16. I had the opportunity to play for the adult and youth choirs. I am versatile in different genres however, I specialize in gospel music. My method of teaching is to learn scales in every key, as well as teaching the student to read music as well as ear training. I started taking lessons at the age of 10, and I knew this would be my instrument of choice.

EXPERIENCE

My teaching experience has taught me that every student is different, and require different approaches. I have been teaching since the year 2000, where I have encouraged each student to practice. I also understand that learning piano can get repetitive therefore, my technique is to start with theory, and then to add playing by ear as well as reading the notes. I have learned that this method helps the student not to get burned out. It is important to have fun while learning. Once the student learns to practice correctly, It becomes second nature.

METHODS USED

For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. My philosophy is to practice, practice, practice. I can never stress that enough.

LESSON STYLE

It actually brings me joy to see my student have the moment where they start to understand what and why they are playing scales and reading music. I encourage my students to not get frustrated. there is a method, and it does not take long to recognize the methods, and how they fall together. I would like to help my student grow, as well as trust themselves. I have learned that it is my responsibility to teach, and the student's responsibility to practice. As the old saying goes, practice makes perfect.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
