To help students become familiar with rhythms, I occasionally use clapping exercises and even collaborate with them to create a song together. When I teach music, I make sure to emphasize sustainability. It's important to me that my students understand how to take care of their instruments, use resources efficiently, and appreciate the natural world that inspires music. By teaching sustainability along with music, I hope to help my students become responsible and caring individuals who can make a positive impact on the world Read More

My lessons for vocalists are divided into two sections: technique and repertoire. For singers, breath management skills are of primary importance as this directly affects intonation. I like to begin with Anne Peckham's The Contemporary Singer. My students can choose any songs they would like to sing while we work on musicianship skills including expression and lyrical phrasing. Singers who want to study jazz and improvisation use one or more of my pedagogical texts on scat singing. Read More

All in all, my approach of teaching is holistic with innovative pedagogical methods. I will observe and adjust the student based on their skills and goals so they may learn the instrument of choice to their greatest abilities. For all levels, I like to listen to their goals and interests when it comes to music; what do you want to achieve by learning an instrument? This way we can move forward in the most efficient and fun way possible. Read More

I began teaching before I graduated from high school thanks to a tutoring program at the high school. I had so much fun working with the elementary school kids that I decided to build a studio up of my own and ever since i have been working with a number of students ages ranging from 4-80. My students are individually pushed to reach goals that they make for themselves at the start of lessons no matter what that goal might be and I love being able to make a fun journey to that goal. My teaching experience has began more recently, but I am a teacher who has had the opportunity to be in school learning new things, while being able to also pass down my discoveries with students. I've also found that a combination of classical, modern, and jazz music can go a long way in helping students enjoy their musical experiences. It's important to make sure my students are staying motivated and always learning more than one genre. Read More

Instruments: Piano Voice

For piano- I teach out of several method books- Faber, Bastein, John Thompson and Alfred's. I also implement Dozen a Day for piano technique and Hanon and scales. I use Czerny for the intermediate student. For voice- I work to build a solid understanding of breath, posture, vowel sounds and shapes, singing legato, etc. I believe a classical technique in both instruments is the best foundation for growth into any style.
