I always like to make sure I am teaching my students what they want to learn, but I do occasionally challenge them by assigning more advanced material that I envision them performing or think would be beneficial to them. I tend to stress fundamentals when it comes to what my philosophy of teaching is. I argue that the more time is spent on fundamentals, the better technique the student will have later on. The challenge comes into play with the fact the fundamentals can get tedious and boring! Shortly after I graduated from University, I was asked to start lecturing. I began with a few principal studies students, and soon I was asked to conduct and direct the Jazz Department's Vocal Ensemble. My student list grew, as did my contribution to one of the top Universities for contemporary music in Australia. I developed curriculum for voice students, became an examiner, directed small jazz ensembles, world music ensembles, vocal masterclasses and once I had graduated with a Master of Philosophy, I began thesis supervision for Honours and Masters students. In 1997, I graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theater from the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music and have been performing and teaching professionally ever since.
