I am a graduate of The Manhattan School of Music, earning both my Bachelor and Master of music degrees. I have performed as a recitalist, in operas and as soloist with orchestra. I have performed locally and abroad, specifically the many Halls at Lincoln Center, The United States Capitol, and in the Rudulfinum Hall in Prague. I love performing and teaching. I've taught lessons for a total of 8 years in New York City, Boston, and Midwestern Illinois. I've taught all kinds of students: children, teens, college students, adults, and retirees. Each student has come with their own goals and passions, and I enjoy helping each individual uncover, free, and develop the natural voice within. In addition to setting each student up with a solid vocal technique, I've taught basic music and vocal health to young children (ages 5-7), developed music reading skills in teens and young adults, helped retirees improve technically so they can better contribute to their community choirs, and even instructed a folk singer in improvisation, songwriting, and healthy folk vocal technique. For my piano students, I like to use a mixture of books from the Alfred, Bastien, and John W. Schaum collections. I eventually assign more advanced solo repertoire as the student progresses. For my vocal students, I pick music based on their interests and vocal qualities. I have taught my students musical theater, opera, art song, gospel, pop, and many other styles throughout the years. I also like to make sure my students have a solid understanding in music theory and often give out worksheets that help them practice how to sight read, recognize different key signatures, and more. With all my students, I like to first figure out their goals and tailor our lessons to match each individuals aspirations. For every singer I will assign various vocal exercises to practice each week. We also will work on sight-reading exercises to encourage a high level of musicianship. For beginners, I typically like to start with the 24 Italian Arias and/or light musical theater pieces to establish a good technical foundation and gradually move on to more advanced repertoire. I believe that creativity is important and I use Alfred and Hal Leonard books as well as theory books to help with the lessons. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly to keep the lessons engaging and fun, no matter their ability level. I am trained in Music Learning Theory, which promotes the building of the foundational aural and oral music skills which lead to music literacy. For young students, this may look like playing music games and echoing tonal rhythm patterns to help develop a vocabulary. For older voice lesson students, activities based in Music Learning Theory will help build fluency and confidence when learning new solo repertoire. Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! It is important that each student progresses at their own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson, acknowledging accomplishments, fueling a students desire to progress, and finding ways to stimulate a students desire to learn more.
