Some weeks a piano student might complete the material rapidly and some weeks, they may want to go slower, taking their time, therefore they excel at their own comfort level and don't feel as though there is a race. Around the age of 15, after about five years of performing, I started teaching guitar lessons to kids around my community and discovered a love for sharing my musical knowledge with others. When I went on to college, I continued teaching individual students and in my sophomore year joined a volunteer teaching group called SLAM! Through this twelve-week program, I had the opportunity to lead a group class of fifteen underprivileged middle schoolers with little to no musical experience. Read More

I always begin by figuring out how I can best teach a student by asking them their interests and goals for singing; whether they want to sing jazz or provide vocals for their rock band, or learn to sing classically, etc. For all students who are atleast in their teens or older, I begin by describing how singing works and talk about the function of the body in singing. I usually use pictures from anatomy books to help point out the key organs and muscle groups that are engaged in healthy singing, so as to give a visual aid of what we are working to condition for singing.
