My love of violin began at age 19 and I joined the college orchestra after 6 months of lessons. I passed ASTACAP level 9 in 2019. I returned to Fullerton College and earned my piano pedagogy certificate with 14 additional units in performance, theory and child development. I have played violin in 3 orchestras over the years and hundreds of local church/wedding/studio performances. I traveled to China with Chapman Symphony and performed 4 concerts. Simultaneously, Jamie single-handedly designed, produced, and taught the General Music Program for K-10 at Cornerstone Academy in Brockport, NY. In the last twelve years, Jamie has built a formidable studio of private students of all ages on guitars, saxophones, piano/keyboard, bass, voice, composition/songwriting, and music theory. Congruently, he has produced and hosted annual student recitals, given pre-conservatory consulting, helping to place students at Belmont, Berklee, SUNY Purchase, MIT, etc., led three pre-school music programs, and served as Jewish Music Specialist and Shabbat Program Coordinator for the 92Y camps summers 2012, 2013, and 2014, and for the UWS JCC Camps summers 2015 and 2016. My Methods: Fundamentals of breath work - incorporating several physical exercises and methods of showing the coordination until it is ingrained Focus on the use of the resonators - projecting the sound to the different cavities where sound resonates before leaving your body and into the room (i.e. 'the mask', mouth resonance, chest resonance, etc) Reducing tongue tension - a common issue is root of the tongue tension and I have several exercises to address this Improving range - most of my students gain notes in their belt range and their head range, and often in their low range as well Increasing the legato vocal line - here we focus on linking the vowels properly supported by the breath Jaw tension - similar to tongue we have evercises for this Style - different approaches such as riffing, back phrasing, using a glottal attack, using a breathy attack - creating colorful expressive phrases that link to the emotion of the song and the style desired Musicality - learning to read music, counting tempo, sustaining pitch, syncopation, dynamics, etc Diction - correct vowel shapes and enunciation + awareness of when tension closes down the vocal line if diction is carried over from speaking habits Performance - using tools from acting training to perform a song effectively and believably Career consultation - when appropriate, also offered Read More

For the younger beginning students, I usually start with Alfred's Beginning Piano Series. Once the student has a grasp of the fundementals, I will begin introducing major and minor scales as well as solo repertoire. For my adult students I will see their level of ability and musical interests, find appropriate material based on their taste and formulate the lesson to include fun stuff as well as build proper mechanics.  For my horn lessons depending on the skill level I being with Essential Elements or the Arban book and build from there incorporating solos of the greats, and songs that they want to learn to play.
