Overview:

Hi, I’m Bastien—though many in Los Angeles know me as BAZ. I’ve been proudly part of the Los Angeles music community since 2019, when I relocated to work with the legendary punk band NOFX. For over 25 years, I’ve dedicated my life to teaching, performing, and sharing the transformative power of music. I hold a Master of Arts in Education from the University of Lorraine (2015), and I bring both academic training and real-world experience into every lesson. As a passionate and experienced music instructor, I work with students of all ages and backgrounds—from adults and teens to neurodivergent learners—offering personalized one-on-one instruction as well as coaching for choirs and orchestras. My teaching philosophy is simple: music is a universal language that connects us, empowers us, and gives us a voice when words fall short. Especially in challenging times, I believe music is not a luxury—it’s a necessity. Beyond teaching, I’m an active producer and recording artist, collaborating with bands and creative projects from around the world. Whether in the classroom or the studio, my goal remains the same: to inspire confidence, creativity, and a lifelong love of music.

EXPERIENCE

My journey as a music teacher began more than 15 years ago, when I started giving private drum lessons during high school. Since then, teaching has become a true passion. Over the past three years, I’ve been working closely with students throughout Los Angeles, helping them grow musically in a supportive and inspiring environment. Today, I’m excited to welcome students into my own fully equipped professional music studio — a creative space designed for exploration, expression, and growth. One of the unique experiences I offer is the opportunity to try multiple instruments in a single lesson. Whether it’s drums, piano, guitar, bass, saxophone, or even music production, students can discover what truly excites and motivates them. I believe music is like a language. Once you understand its core principles, you gain the freedom to express yourself across different instruments. My goal is to help each student build that strong foundation, then guide them as they dive deeper into mastering the instrument that speaks to them most. Whether you’re just beginning or looking to expand your musical skills, my studio is a place where curiosity is encouraged, creativity is nurtured, and passion for music can truly grow.

METHODS USED

There is no single method that fits every student. We all absorb and process new concepts differently — some are visual learners, some rely on physical and muscle memory, others have a natural sense of rhythm or strong analytical skills. Each student deserves an approach tailored to the way they learn best. For me, every new student is a new creative journey. Together, we explore the fundamental concepts that allow us to “speak” the language of music, using the methods that resonate most with them. This can include visual graphics and drawings, listening exercises, imitation and play-along, question and answer, singing, movement, music theory, and practical application on the instrument. The tools available to learn music are endless, and I’m always expanding my approach to make lessons engaging, clear, and inspiring. My goal is to create an environment where students feel understood, supported, and motivated — so they can progress confidently while enjoying the process of learning.

LESSON STYLE

At the heart of my teaching style is a balance between understanding concepts, developing technique, and applying everything in a practical, musical way. Technique and theory are essential, but they should serve expression — not limit it. What we learn should ultimately help us communicate and create freely. For example, while we might spend time practicing the C major scale on the piano to understand its structure and build familiarity, the next step is bringing it to life. After covering the fundamentals, I guide students toward using that scale in a real musical context — whether through improvising over a simple chord progression or adding melodies to a song they already know and enjoy. Music is meant to be played, not just learned.

Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.
