Instruments: Voice

My lessons are pretty straight forward. We begin with understanding body posture and alignment for singing. Once in good posture, I encourage breath flow while maintaining good alignment. A good exercise for breath control and release is taking a deep breath in 10 seconds, holding the expansion or suspension for 10 seconds and then releasing (NOT PUSHING) the breath in an s sound, all while maintaining a tall and expanded posture. Next, we move on to scales from the middle of the voice to the lowest notes to get the voice warmed up. Read More

Instruments: Piano Voice

For students with previous piano experience, I first assess knowledge and ability in order to assign the proper level of either Bastien's Piano Basics or other solo repertoire. For voice students, I conduct an assessment of their individual range and skills in order to find classical or musical theatre repertoire that encourages development of proper vocal technique. I also work with each student to find modern music that they love and will help target their specific singing goals. Read More

We will do funny little scales all designed to strengthen different areas of your voice to make you a diverse and confident singer. If you are coming for keyboards, I will emphasis the style of music YOU are interested in, whether pop/rock, jazz or even classical. Or maybe you are singer-songwriter looking to accompany yourself on keys or guitar, I have had 100's of hours performing solo gigs on both keyboard and guitar. Read More

I have been teaching since I was 12. My parents' friends would ask me to teach them guitar! My degrees are in Theater, Music and English, and my Master's in Education from Harvard University taught me that everyone learns differently. I had the opportunity to study with Professor Howard Gardner, who developed the theory of Multiple Intelligences. Some of us learn visually. Others are far more tactile. And then there are students who hear and play by ear. Read More

I Try to get away from mechanism without joy. Everything has to be close to the music. Exercises to be actually doing them with a rhythm and time. Other than doing things musically, practicing in different times and intentions help a lot for the student to be open to play songs in different ways. Technique and theory are necessary tools. To apply concepts musically they need to do it with musical taste. Read More

Tips for Recording Live Music

...the venue. If this is the route you take for recording, then it is very helpful to have all levels and settings adjusted and in place at the time of the sound check. With two soundboards to manage, it’s also a good idea to know the show from start to finish. There are often audio adjustments that must take place throughout a performance, and it can be very helpful to have notes available on when to make these adjustments—particularly if you have to make them on two different soundboards.   Other effective means of recording live music involve the use of different ... How Music Theory Can Improve Your Songwriting

...secondary note you hear is another A an octave above A440. What’s an octave? Double the 440 vibrations per second from A 440 and you’ll get a higher A note of A880, which is an interval of an octave.     Intervals   Intervals are the differences between pitches. Understanding the relationships between pitches is the bedrock of music theory. Let’s get back to A440. When you play A440, the first secondary note you hear is A880, and the second note you hear is E660. E 660 is exactly halfway between A440 and A880. This is called a Perfect 5th, and it’s the most ... Read More

...strings. Those open strings are E A D and G. So, those are the keys guitar players feel most comfortable playing in. Unfortunately, on saxophone those keys transpose to C# F# B E (Eb horns) and F# B E A (Bb horns). In this situation, you better feel as comfortable playing in C# as you do playing in C. Brief Review from Part I Before you read on, if you haven’t read the first installment of this blog series entitled “Jazz Exercises for the Saxophone: An Introduction to Playing in 12 Keys”, I highly suggest you take the ... The Benefits of Learning About Audio Engineering

...schooling. Traditionally many of the skills of this trade were taught by hands on real-world experiences in studios or music venues.   The ‘old-school’ route to becoming an audio engineer typically involves finding an internship in which you work for education and opportunity rather than pay. Internships in high-end studios can be incredibly competitive and promise nothing, but the benefits of learning about audio engineering in this way is that if you work hard and are well received the opportunities and doors that are opened are endless. Internships can even turn into paid positions as a junior engineer or monitor engineer ... Read More
