My style is relaxed, confident and detailed. I am passionate about the music and love to see my students enjoying the art of expressing themselves and communicating through song. I begin each lesson with yoga, strand deep breathing. I believe that the body should be as free from stress as possible and that my student’s breathing should be as natural and organic as possible. With all my students, I like to first figure out their goals and tailor our lessons to match each individuals aspirations. For every singer I will assign various vocal exercises to practice each week. We also will work on sight-reading exercises to encourage a high level of musicianship. For beginners, I typically like to start with the 24 Italian Arias and/or light musical theater pieces to establish a good technical foundation and gradually move on to more advanced repertoire. With beginning students, I will lay out all of the fundamentals, teaching all of the scales, basic chords, key signatures and time signatures, and gradually integrate strategies for reading music. Depending on what the student is interested in learning, I will pull from my pool of repertoire - we could be studying a Bach Invention at the same time as a Billy Joel song. Classical music is great for technique and in many ways textbook for teaching harmony, but I play and love contemporary music, and will teach anything, as long as there is some form of musical knowledge to be gained from the material. In college, I've learned how to teach effectively in my private lessons using both sight reading and ear training as foundational elements to the lesson. Additionally, I'm a licensed school teacher.
