My passion for singing dates back to when I was a child, singing in choirs and performing in churches. In 2011, I graduated from the Greatbach School of Music at Houghton College, earning a bachelor's degree in Vocal Performance with honors. I have been blessed to perform in several regional theatre productions, as well as two off-Broadway shows. I have brought my love of coaching and teaching to these productions. I was the vocal captain at La Comedia Dinner Theatre in Ohio, and the music director for an off-Broadway production.
I began teaching 9 years ago while studying classical singing in college. My students have ranged from absolute beginners to intermediate level performers. I have helped students prepare for auditions, performances, and even a sung marriage proposal! It brings me great joy to see a student succeed vocally. I love giving them the tools to be able to discover their unique voice to their best ability. While I first began my training in opera, I do not require my students to sing opera arias. I encourage students to find their style of music and train them to sing within their passion.
I have a set of vocalises that I have comprised throughout the years. They begin with simple breathing exercises and hums to enable the student to connect to their breath, and move to more intricate scales and arpeggios to develop a strong, even tone. I choose repertoire that students truly enjoy to sing, as I have found that they will make great progress while practicing a song they love. When teaching children, I keep lessons simple and fun, while assigning exercises that they enjoy. I find that adults bring in more specific goals, therefore I tailor my lessons towards training them to find the success they need to meet those goals.
My love for teaching has grown over the years out of the success I see my students achieve. Being able to guide a student towards vocal growth is the most rewarding part of what I do. I love seeing the "lightbulb" go off for them. I have taken voice lessons for 14 years, and know how it feels to be frustrated vocally but also thriving vocally. My goal for students is to create a safe space for them to experiment with their unique voice and reach their full potential. Anyone can sing, and I meet the student at whatever level they bring into the lesson. I find that encouragement goes a long way to build confidence. My hope is that every student learns to sing with vocal freedom in a healthy way.
