I began teaching 9 years ago while studying classical singing in college. My students have ranged from absolute beginners to intermediate level performers. I have helped students prepare for auditions, performances, and even a sung marriage proposal! It brings me great joy to see a student succeed vocally. I was named a 2021 National YoungArts Foundation Finalist in Popular Voice and received the Merit Winner award for songwriting in the 2020 YoungArts Competition. I was selected into Grammy Camp 2020 and 2021 for Vocal Performance, NYU Contemporary Voice Workshop in 2020, and the NYU Songwriting Intensive in 2020. I won 1st in the 2019 NATS NJ Doris Lenz competition, 1st in the 2020 NATS NY, and 2nd in the 2021 NATS Eastern Competition. I was also recognized as a semi-finalist for the 2020 Hal Leonard vocal competition in the musical theater category and received the best soloist award for Blues/Pop/Rock Voice in the Downbeat Magazine 2021 Competition. The body is an important part of singing. My lessons often incorporate fun, sometimes silly but Always useful movement. I like to send students home with one challenge every week, and a larger challenge for every month. Success feels good for any student, and short term goals that tie in to long term goals are a good way to keep feeling inspired and developing a drive to succeed. The foundation of any good technique is the most important aspect of maintaining that technique in a healthy way; similar to a dancer practicing at the bar each day, I encourage my students to internalize the foundational warm-ups first, upon which we'll build the rest of the vocal practice. With 15 years of performance experience, I have sang with the Richmond Symphony Chorus, the Tulsa Chorale led by Dr. Tim Sharp, the TU Cappella Chamber Singers and TU Chorale led by Dr. Kim Childs, and the Chancel Choir of the First Presbyterian Church of Tulsa led by Ron Pearson. Each student is usually at a different level. For beginning students we focus on breathing, how to make sound that is free and easy, pitch, rhythm, tone and simple sight reading and songs. I make my own lesson plans according to each student's needs. If you already have a good basic knowledge of singing then we move on to improving tone, range, musical knowledge, dynamics and whatever help the student may need with high notes, low notes, fixing the gap between head and chest, belting, or any other vocal challenge they might be facing. I base my teaching style on the individual student and how they learn.  Some students learn more by rote, others learn more by oral and others learn more by understanding theory.  I always incorporate proper technique so that the student developes as quickly as possible. For those students who like working from a more traditional sense I work primarily with the John Thompsen and Bastien Piano Methods. Other students, especially students that start at an older age I work immediately by having them play familiar songs and melodies and as their technique improves providing them with more difficult music to play.
