I like to begin with Anne Peckham's The Contemporary Singer. My students can choose any songs they would like to sing while we work on musicianship skills including expression and lyrical phrasing. I began teaching almost 15 years ago, starting with private lessons, and eventually branching out to singing and handbell choirs, inner-city after school programs, outreach programs for the homeless, and adult continuing learning in Boston, MA. I moved to NJ 3 years ago to be closer to my musical theatre career, and have enjoyed teaching private lessons to typical and special needs students of all ages. I try to incorporate different exercises for each piece of music to keep things interesting for my students. I believe active physical engagement of the body is important to achieve freedom for the voice. This is particularly helpful for younger children to keep their minds from wandering during the lesson. I often ask for feedback from the students, to check in on how they are feeling physically and vocally. For the voice (as it is a built-in instrument) we work on expanding vocal range through warm-up exercises. It's important to identify the natural transitions throughout a student's voice, usually based on classical technique for healthy sound production. We will be able to reconcile the voice with the music that the student is interested in singing, all styles are welcome! I usually like to get to know a student at first and see how they learn. I ask questions and get them making sounds right away to see how they use their bodies and how they naturally use their voice for speaking and such. From there I develop a plan for the best way to help them. I also like to identify their vocal goals (pop singing, opera, etc.) so that I know what direction they want to head and what kinds of tools I can offer them. Read More
