I began teaching in 2009 while I was attending the University of Massachusetts Lowell. While I was a student I began to study with some truly great musicians who really helped me realize my potential. I got some jobs teaching area high school drumlines and marching bands and really enjoyed the experience. When I first started playing I was mostly interested in marching bands and drumlines. For beginners, especially younger players, I believe it is best to start with simple pieces to build security. For this I usually try to pick fairly well known melodies that the student likely has in their head already, such as 'Ode to Joy' or 'Jingle-Bells'. By starting with tunes the student already knows, I believe that the learning process becomes much more intuitive. For teens/adults I encourage the student to find out what the students interests/goals are and adjust my lesson accordingly. Read More
