My first goal as a music instructor is to help my students find the excitement and passion for making music. I personally tailor each of my lesson plans to the student's interests and goals, and I truly believe that a love for making music is the necessary bedrock for a life full of music and a desire to practice and hone skills. I just graduated NYU with an MFA in Musical Theatre Composition. Read More

I use the basic classical warm ups , fundaments of classical singing , strengthening the diaphragm and voice placement. Building range slowly and carefully while building stamina through exercises and pieces that will help the individual voice grow. For Jazz , I use The Michele Weir Jazz Improvisation as a starting point. For students who want to build their technique but don't want operatic training per say, I work a lot with musical theatre pieces as well as pop or disney. Read More

I begin with students by asking their goals. Once I have a clear understanding of what results the student is looking for, I can then find ways to help them in achieving these goals. For instance, I always work with the student on warm-ups at the beginning of each lesson. This is because it is crucial to ensure we are singing in a healthy way and to give students a tangible tool to take home that allows them to practice and grow in their technique. Read More

I have always felt an innate passion for music. From a young age, you could be sure to find me by my family's upright piano - either plunking pretend melodies on its keys or hiding in the magical world I thought existed behind it. Soon, I joined every performing and competitive ensemble I could. Each new form of music and expression was wonderful to me. Singing, theater, mallet percussion, vibraphone, saxophone, jazz, learning different musical forms, I couldn't get enough! Read More

We also begin work on scales and cadences. Since dexterity and interest in exploring the keyboard usually exceeds note-reading ability. I use a chart to spell out scales and chords instead of a scale book at this point. Students enjoy progressing through the songs and ask for new scales. By the time they've completed "Teaching Little Fingers...." and have learned single-octave C major, A minor, G major and E minor scales, we're ready to move on to John Thompson's First Grade Book. I started teaching music lessons back when I was 14, when friends would ask for tips or lessons, and local parents wanted lessons for their children. I fell in love with the act of helping others to realize the music inside them, and have been teaching consistently ever since. Learning any musical instrument involves learning about oneself. The student and teacher must work together to define their goals, be comfortable confronting shortcomings, discover how they learn best, and find the patience and drive to practice for long enough to get better.
