My methods are tailored to each individual student. One size does not fit all in vocal training, and while the same foundational aspects are being taught, the implementation with which they are delivered is different for everyone. I always begin by focusing on teaching the breath and breath support and control as the solid base upon which to build your entire training, as this is used across the varied styles of music performance universally. My teaching philosophy is the same for any level student - that the experience be enjoyable, supportive and productive. The first lesson is a get to know each other and assessment of where you are in your musical journey. I use a variety of different books - note spellers, beginning books etc. - depending on the specific need of each student. For more advanced students I draw upon the great repertoire of music that is out there. Read More

I have been involved in Musical Direction since 2008 when I established The Milford Players as an annual summer community theater group. I have since worked regularly in Brooklyn, New York as the Music Director, and have worked with various organizations through out the North East region ever since. My favorite part about working with new artists is helping to reveal the incredible capabilities of the human body. So many of us doubt our ability to become a focused, competent musician because "we dont have the time" or "we're too old to start a new instrument". Read More

When will I start to see results?
This is not a one size fits all question or answer. Referring back to the question about effective practicing, results can only be found once you’ve put in the effort. However, I’ve had students be instantly surprised immediately if I’ve helped access something they’ve never experienced before. This could be a very simple adjustment or it could be hitting a note they had no idea they had in them. This is very much dependent on the rapport between teacher and student and the effort and preparation each have brought to the table.

What does a normal practice session look like for you?
Vocalizing is absolutely essential to the beginning of every session. Vocalizing is equally important in my own performing. I love vocalizing because it allows me to test drive my voice for the day. Our voices can fluctuate so much day to day, it’s important to feel in tune with your own instrument. My sessions start with plenty of vocalizing and eventually leads to work on solo pieces. I always allow plenty of space to communicate with my students and give them the opportunity to speak about what there experiencing while they’re singing.

If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I have 2 degrees. My first degree is a Bachelor of Arts from Oregon state university in Vocal performance. My second degree is a masters in music from Brooklyn college conservatory of music. I chose to pursue these degrees because I knew I wanted to be trained to the highest degree and be able to use that knowledge to continue to grow as a vocalist and help others grow in their own instrument. While a masters was not required for the jobs I perform now, it was extremely essential in securing my role as vocal captain in my casts.

If you weren't a musician what do you think you'd be doing instead?
If I wasn’t a musician, I would still be acting. I can’t see myself doing anything outside of art full time. I have plenty of friends from school who gave up when it got hard and are now doing other things. They have very respectable jobs, but I know many of them see what I’m doing now and wish that hadn’t given up so soon. I always knew that I’d never be satisfied in my life if I gave up on performing and teaching. I’ve had plenty of different survival jobs along the way and it’s shown me that I can excel in anything I put my mind to, so I might as well excel at what I’m passionate about.

When did you decide to become a professional musician? Was it a gradual decision or was there a defining moment for you?
I think I’ve always known it would happen. I played dress up as a little girl, pretending I was notable broadway characters. And in my mind I was performing in front of a full audience. More practically, I think I really knew in college. I had wonderful professors and saw how much they loved to teach and many of them still performed. Watching them be able to do both, was extremely encouraging and gave me hope in a bright future in musical artistry. Of course, there are years of performing for free before you make it big, so I think when that first real offer happened, that was when I knew all the hard work was paying off.
