I start off all beginning students by teaching them the fundamentals of singing. If students have taken lessons in the past, I work on reviewing fundamental concepts with them. When a student first begins lessons, I typically spend more time on helping to build the student's technique than on repertoire, and as the student progresses, I split the lesson more equally between the two components. I believe in motivating students by helping them learn the repertoire to which they are most attracted, though I do also give them repertoire of styles with which they may be less familiar in order to help them solidify their technique. I work composition into the lesson using the Orff-Schulwerk technique of elemental music creation. In addition, I supplement written musical work as needed. I start off with the book Singing Lessons for Little Singers and when start introducing songs as the student progress. For adults, it's best to know what each students want and need and I'll walk them according to their needs. I typically use the Alfred books for young beginning students. In these books, children learn the geography of the keyboard and learn about the contours of musical notation and by the end are using both hands. For adults, as well as intermediate children and up, I prefer the Michael Aaron series for intermediate and beyond. For beginning adults I use the Aaron Musical Primer.
