Every student is different, so my approach to each student is tailored to their goals. Young students need more guidance than older students and are encouraged to broaden their musical tastes and explore what will ignite their musical imaginations. Some of my students are working toward auditions such as The Voice and we focus on song choice, technique and performance. I teach every one of my students as though they were my only student. I began teaching Private Lessons when I was 17 to elementry school age students and fell in love with it immediatley, I love sharing with others and figuring out how to make the impossible possible. Music can seem mysterious or daunting at first, but my job is to break it down in a methodical way to help my students digest a song/topic and reveal the way a "mystery" functions. Since highschool I've always had a handful of students that I've worked with weekly in my private studio. Read More

For beginners to the guitar, bass or banjo I usually start with the basic notes and chord shapes. When they progress and for more advanced students, I introduce reading tab, music, scales and basic chord progressions. For advanced students I generally work with modes, finer technique and advanced sightreading, chordal and modal melodies. To work in practice exercises I typically bury them in pieces the student enjoys to better get the hang of them. Read More

Immediately I'd like to know why the student is pursuing the given instrument, then sort of gauge a level of passion, drive, talent, etc. and then work from there. With guitar and piano there are several routes one could choose for performance, and each one has different teaching fundamentals. Someone who gravitates more toward Jazz will need a very strong base in musical theory, where as someone who wants to play classical might need stronger technical work. Read More

My start as a full-time multimedia teacher was with a company called Rivoli Music. I had taught 25-30 Japanese women... It got tight in places (language) but it was mostly pleasure having the students' Photoshop, Flash, then make FLV video with original soundtracks. I had enough experience after 8+ years of working and teaching to become a full-time teaching musician again... I loved showing my original work to the public (C.E.I.G.), and the public to the classroom to studies on how it was constructed. Read More

Teaching piano is a great joy. My goal is to help students develop the skill to make playing music fun and satisfying, whether their goal is to become a professional or to simply enjoy playing for its own sake. I've worked for several arts agencies (Arts Horizons, Healing Arts Initiative, CREATE) so I've had the privilege to teach music in a variety of settings. While teaching in a classroom setting is immensely satisfying, seeing individual students grow in proficiency, dexterity. concentration, is an even bigger thrill. Read More
