When I give students pieces, exercises, and examples to improve their skills, it is crucial that they not only enjoy what theyre playing but are able to apply it to other areas in their musical vocabulary. From my experience, I have noticed this excites the students the most because they are able to grasp the information in terms of how to play as opposed to what to play. My approach to teaching really varies depending on the students specific needs. For absolute beginners, I can tend to follow a more concrete progression, but depending on who the student is, and what they're level of passion may be for learning something specific, the lesson may be highly specific. If the student is interested, I personally like to give them an understanding of some of the theory as they go along, even if they are a beginner because I believe it helps them to see the bigger picture. Manhattan-based jazz trombonist Jimmy has a bachelor's degree in Jazz Studies from the University of Michigan and a Master's Degree from the Manhattan School of Music. While at the University of Michigan, Jimmy studied under Dennis Wilson as well as Geri Allen and Bob Hurst and performed at the Detroit Jazz Festival. Upon moving to New York, Jimmy became a student of SFJazz trombonist Luis Bonilla and has performed at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola, The Blue Note, Zinc Bar, Smalls, and Fat Cat as well as many other venues.
