I taught at The University of Cape Town as a lecture in Jazz vocal studies from 2004. I was involved in The Artscape Youth Jazz Program as a mentor for several years as well as a performer and lecturer for several years at The National Arts Festival/ Grahamstown Jazz festival in South Africa. Each student is usually at a different level. For beginning students we focus on breathing, how to make sound that is free and easy, pitch, rhythm, tone and simple sight reading and songs. I make my own lesson plans according to each student's needs. If you already have a good basic knowledge of singing then we move on to improving tone, range, musical knowledge, dynamics and whatever help the student may need with high notes, low notes, fixing the gap between head and chest, belting, or any other vocal challenge they might be facing. For voice, I focus on proper understanding of the body and its role in singing. I combine this with a breakdown of individual skills followed by performance practice. The combination of the 2 allows there to be an understanding of the correct technique and an immediate opportunity for application. I wont compromise a students health or talent by letting them move too quickly if their only interest is learning songs.
