I teach the basics first. I show my student how to hold the bow and the violin in detail. I explain that it will be awkward to hold the bow in correct position because it is unusual for person to hold the right hand that way. Typically, if a student is brand new we will start with learning the basics of the violin and reading music using various excerpts and hands on experience.
