I have been teaching piano for 17 years and have worked with a wide variety of students across many age groups and ability levels. My experience includes teaching young beginners, school-age children, teens, adult beginners, and older adults returning to music later in life. I have taught students with different learning styles, attention spans, and goals, adapting my approach to meet each students needs. For each instrument, I have the same basic approach: discover what they like, assess what they can do, and begin with the fundamentals.  If a student is more advanced, I still like to spend time on fundamentals at the beginning anyway to see if we can fill in any foundational weakness that the student may have.   For each instrument, I also have a wide array of repitoire that I give students that zero-in on technical challenges a student will be presented with. My teaching style is laid back with the full intention of moving forward in both technique and enjoyment. Each Lesson is geared toward the Goals we agree on as Student and Teacher. Depending on age and experience, I set goals at 3 months or 6 months. It is crucial to allow the student to learn at his or her own rate. For about a year I have taught the students (from the ages of 10-50) trumpet and piano at the Oxford School of music. Ive got song with the students, but still maintained the get through the lessons. I tried my best teaching them what I know about the trumpet, even though I mostly taught the piano (with the best of my knowledge). There was one time that I remember before the pandemic occurred, on October, I gave a trumpet sectional to the Oxford Jazz band teaching them the fundamentals of the blues and identifying the melody, rhythm, and harmony (form for which to improvise on). I have been teaching since 1998. I love making music fun for my students, while requiring students to learn fundamentals such as music theory and vocal health. Teaching has been part of my life for over 17 years and I hope to continue for at least that many more. I believe music is for everybody and that each individual can improve and learn if they care and make an honest effort.
