With Violin Students, I like to start with the Suzuki method, Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, as well as some basic 1 octave scales. The first book of Suzuki is taught mainly by ear, while in the background I am also teaching rhythm with the Essential Elements material. With production songwriting and guitar, I like to work on basic chord shapes, chord changes and basic music theory so the student can understand the concepts clearly. Read More

The most rewarding part of being a teacher is to see your students grow and love their musicianship. Music is a language that is more universal than any other language in the world! Passing on the knowledge and works of composers and artists from yesterday to today. I set realistic goals for my students that are achievable and rewarding. I tend to look on the positive side of each performance and I teach through kindness humor and respect. Read More

The learning process should be, for the most part, fun and based upon a strong relationship between the teacher and the student. Curriculum and lesson plans are based on student's abilities and aspirations with appropriate balance between theoretical and practical work. The lesson material is always carefully chosen, and when necessary, adapted to specific learning needs. With a proper approach, everyone can learn to play music. Whether you want to pursue a music career, or just play for fun and enjoyment I can help you attain your goals. Read More

Most importantly, I believe every student is different and I always try to avoid a "one size fits all" approach to teaching. That said, I'm a big advocate of scales, etudes, and technical exercises, as well as exploring repertoire (solo, chamber music, and symphonic). I encourage students to listen to a wide variety of music, in addition to their work on the violin, sometimes with weekly listening assignments. Daily, systematic practice at home is required of all my students (especially younger ones) for clear progress to happen. Read More

I have been teaching independently since 2004, with experience in classical, Celtic fiddle, bluegrass, rock and improvisation. In addition to private lessons, I have assisted with classes from elementary through high school level at various schools. I plan customized lessons and work with students individually to achieve goals. I like to form real relationships with my students and still stay in touch with students I have not taught for years! It is very rewarding to me to help students find their own voices in music, and I try to provide the tools they will need to be successful in whichever style/field of music they are drawn to. With beginner students, regardless of age, I start with the Suzuki pre-twinkle exercises to build a solid foundation of technique, as well as starting ear training exercises and note reading practice. Once a student has mastered the pre-twinkle fundamentals, I move to the first two Suzuki books, and supplement with etudes tailored to the student's level and musical interests. My philosophy is that learning should be organic and enjoyable, so I do my best to introduce repetitive and uninteresting exercises only when necessary, and to make them as entertaining as possible when I do so. Instruments: Piano Voice Violin

I love teaching and helping students reach their potential.  I have been teaching music for over 40 years.  I teach beginning to professional level voice lessons from folk and pop to Broadway and Opera. I also teach beginning level piano, violin, viola, cello, double bass, and guitar. My students understand the voice and voice production. I am thrilled to pass on a fantastic technique to the serious opera or Broadway singers who have struggled with unfocused and frustrating techniques. Read More

...hundreds of songs on the ukulele.   Here’s all the ukulele chords in the key of C major, a key that thousands of songs are written in: Reason #7: Ukuleles are unique   Guitars, pianos and synthesizers are great instruments, but they’re almost a little too commonly found in popular music. But the sound of a ukulele is interesting and relatively new to the pop music soundscape. If you’ve been writing or performing music for years and are looking to add something completely new to what you do, playing ukulele is a great way to shake things up.   In addition to being wildly... Easy Piano Rock Songs: Six Rock Classics You Should Play On Piano

...impression is still there. Considering how Lynyrd Skynyrd’s hit came only four years prior, it’s hard to imagine that Warren Zevon (and co-writers LeRoy Marinell and Waddy Wachtel) didn’t have “Sweet Home Alabama” in mind. They both make for great, easy piano rock songs.   Originality aside, the opening lyrics in “Werewolves of London” are funny enough to make anyone a fan, and the catchy tune reached number 21 on the American Top 40 charts. It remained in the top 40 for six weeks.   Why Does This Work For Piano?   One simple reason: the piano was featured in ... Read More

Intro to Jazz Bass Technique

...leave a lot of space, play whole notes or half notes – this is often the feel in slow ballads. The most common pattern for jazz bass is the walking bass line which consists of playing quarter notes. Eighth notes add syncopation and rhythmic interest. Faster notes like triplets and 16ths are used for soloing. Often the rhythm will change in the course of a jazz tune so a bass player might play in half time (slower notes) for one section, then walk in another section or variation, or even drop out for a drum solo. The amount of notes or intensity ... Read More

...good solo. Summary of Part II   The first installment of my blog series “Jazz Exercises for the Saxophone” discussed the importance of 12 keys and provided the beginning of a systematic approach for learning to feel comfortable playing in every key. This second installment presented some new information that, when combined with the material from the previous lesson, can begin to make you feel comfortable playing over jazz standards.   We learned about the ii-V-I progression and how to begin to approach it. I briefly mentioned flipping through the pages of a Real Book and searching for ... Read More
