I first ask the student to play so I can hear him/her. After a student plays a short piece of music of their own choosing I can determine what the next step is. Each student has his/her own individual needs. For beginning students who are children, I like to start with either the Rubank Elementary Method or Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, as I find these provide a strong foundation in proper technique and sound, and reading music. As we move through this method, I will introduce exercises to help the student further develop a good sound on their instrument. At the same time, we will also begin to play solo and duet repertoire. My teaching method is roughly similar, whether you are young or old, a beginner or advanced. I believe in staying as close to music as possible; exercises have their place, but if we can use actual music to teach technique, sound, articulation, harmony, or any other topic, all the better. As a teacher, I consider a large part of my role simply curating the music you hear and learn, combining both your interests with your skill level and needs as an instrumentalist. Read More
