I like to tailor my lesson plans to each individual student. For vocalists, I take age and ability into account and will usually target one or two elements of technique at a time. Once I have a grasp on their level and voice type and what sorts of music they are interested in, I will pick out repertoire that will be fun and challenging for the student, and will put into practice the elements of technique we work on in warm ups. I am a big believer in the breath. For a beginner I do a lot of exercises with breath connection to encourage healthy, connected singing. I like the idea that the voice dances on the breath and is buoyed and protected by that technique. I am also a very physical teacher, encouraging students to use their whole body in the act of singing. The voice is carried by the whole body and not just the muscles that are the vocal chords. A vital part of developing voice repertoire is exploring various interests and styles. I encourage all vocalists to choose songs that they will enjoy singing, but I will guide my students in exploring any realm otherwise not explored. I encourage healthy singing and practicing techniques that will ensure productive rehearsal without fear of vocal damage. A professor of mine used to always say, "there is no singing without acting", and I ensure that when a student sings a song, they will not only know how to sing properly, but they will also have a deep understanding of what they are singing about and how to convey the message. My teaching experience started at the School of Rock and I loved it ever since. I continued to improve on my teaching ability as an English Teacher in China. I lead some group lessons at "Group Expression" in Shanghai; working with non native English speakers. The skills learned as an English teacher have helped immensily with communicating with students on how to better approach their singing. I like to use the IPA chart to break down words in any language which helps immensly when talking to students regardless of native tounge. Read More

For my piano students, I like to use a mixture of books from the Alfred, Bastien, and John W. Schaum collections. I eventually assign more advanced solo repertoire as the student progresses. For my vocal students, I pick music based on their interests and vocal qualities. I have taught my students musical theater, opera, art song, gospel, pop, and many other styles throughout the years. I also like to make sure my students have a solid understanding in music theory and often give out worksheets that help them practice how to sight read, recognize different key signatures, and more.
