I am graduated with my Bachelor of Music in Music Performance at The Pennsylvania State University studying with distinguished professor Velvet Brown. I am currently pursuing a Master of Music in Music Performance studying with Professor Lance LaDuke. I play euphonium, trombone, tuba and piano and can teach all four. I currently have 10+ years of teaching and playing. I have many ensemble experiences including 3 time Connecticut All-State Concert Band, 1 time NAfME All-National Concert Band, 1 time NAfME All-Eastern Concert Band, orchestral experience both in youth ensembles and at Penn State, Concert band experience at Penn State, and chamber ensemble experience in tuba/euphonium quartets and brass quintets. My mantra is to practice for success, not to do a certain number of hours or drills; this is something I learned after practicing technical drills for several hours a day. I remain partial to the Liszt technical exercises. I also continue to use certain exercises I find useful and not too time-consuming. I first played the drums in middle school where I never read music, only played back what was told. I begin my teaching by gauging the student's current ability; once it has been recognised, I then inquire about what it is the student wishes to accomplish under my tutelage. I weed out any early misgivings by trying to get the student to settle for realistic goals. As a teacher I constantly monitor things like student posture, fingering, phrasing, dynamics etc.. I choose to work on one aspect of the myriad of struggles wisely. I allow ample time to discuss the emotional responses (both positive and negative) the student is having to a piece. The student must learn to become self-aware in terms of their own emotive response. When I can relate harmonically to the fact that a student is responding to certain chord progressions or certain harmonic style I then make a point of going over these one by one; going over each in different keys if necessary. My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 5 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my studio for the last 2 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for singing/the instrument.
