I am sure, I was born a teacher, because when I explain anything, even in piano class, guitar or voice classes, I can see the reactions of the student when they understand me. Hello! I am a veteran musician with over 30 years of experience. Music is the love of my life. I was first drawn to it listening to radio as a young boy in the car. It stood out and drew me in. I took up piano in junior high school and directed the school's SING productions. At NYU I studied music history, theory, composition, and jazz with a variety of teachers and composers. Read More

I only teach Intermediate and Advanced students, and my method really depends on the particular student. I don't believe in a single, "core curriculum" for piano-playing. It really depends on the students' goals, strengths/weaknesses, etc. For my beginning intermediate students, I usually give a selection of little pieces to learn by Bach, Schubert, and Schumann to start developing their ear and sense of rhythm/musicality. I also highly encourage my students to learn new things constantly so that they get more comfortable learning new music fast! Read More

I base my students' curriculum on their individual needs and interests. I strongly believe in learning fundamentals and the principals of music through scales, music theory, ear training, and reading music notation. I believe it is equally important for students to develop their own musical interests and goals so that we can apply all of the practiced skills in a fun and meaningful way. An example of this would is if a student wanted to learn a Beatles song I would have the student learn the chords and melody, but also the associated major/minor scale that song uses and develop an exercise that would be helpful towards learning the song. For young beginning piano students, I typically start with John Thompson's Modern Course for the Piano: The First Grade Book and move up throughout the series from there. For young beginning voice students, I start with lessons on proper breath support, sight-singing, intonation exercises, and warm-ups to shape their voice. For both my piano and voice students, I establish a strong, classical foundation that is built on fundamentals to get their instrument working properly and then branch out to other genres from there. All of my lessons, regardless of instrument, begin in the same way: warm ups! I tailor warm ups to the student's repertoire and change it up frequently so the student doesn't get bored or go on autopilot. For all vocalists, regardless of age, we work on breathing properly and posture, then moving on to tone and stylistic choices. For my instrumentalists, we work on breathing, proper technique for their instrument, and age appropriate repertoire. Read More
