Overview:

I am a music teacher who is very passionate about imparting knowledge and sharing music with my students. I have been teaching music theory, solfeggio, voice, counterpoint and choral conducting. I graduated with three degrees in music, namely Bachelor of Music in Music Education, Bachelor of Music in Voice, Bachelor of Music in Conducting. I also have received Cum Laude for the three aforementioned degrees (2009, 2010, 2011). All of my students have become professionals themselves and are teaching and performing at the same time.

EXPERIENCE

My teaching experience started in 2002 when I enrolled at the Conservatory of Music. Initially, I accepted private students in my home whose age ranged from 12 to 50 years years old. Then, after some time I decided to join the YMCA Music Department in Manila, Philippines. Since then, I have regularly taught students at home and at the YMCA studio. When I graduated, I started teaching music in the College of Music for students majoring in Voice and Choral Conducting. I always have encouraged my students to do regular practices and lessons and found that my teaching method has always been motivating both to me and my students. I even encouraged them to join regular recitals and even enter competitions to help them gauge themselves how far they have gone and to give them sense of accomplishments. I'm always looking forward to having lessons with my students.

METHODS USED

For any students, my method has always been consistent with all types of music. I always ask my students to know what type of music they are most interested in performing, so that I can help them better by giving them lessons that will surely have them perform with ease. In general, after I get to know my students, I help them read notes. And as we progress, I help them study some vocalises and Italian songs for beginners. From this, I help them build repertoire that is worthy of showcasing them in a recital and probably graded examinations like the ABSRM.

LESSON STYLE

It has always been my joy when I see my students later on perform music that they love. Thus, I as a music teacher, would be more than willing to help my students sing and make music at their own level and eventually climbs up the musical ladder. To do this, setting standards and specific and realistic objectives are a must. During the process, regular assessments are done so that students know their accomplishments and feel more comfortable making music. My teaching style is always dependent and designed to be in congruence with what students can do, what level they are in, what they actually need and what they what to accomplish.

Prof. Ricky S. was my professor in College. He is one of the greatest persons I ever met. He is great in singing and playing piano. Having voice lessons with him was a great experience. He trained me and gave me an opportunity to sing infront of a large crowd. He gave me confidence and he showed me that aside from pop, I can also sing songs like kundiman, danza, etc. He was like a father to us outside the school and a strict professor inside the room because he wants us to acquired all the information he gave to us. I saw that he was so dedicated and passionate in teaching us. He even gave us free vocal lessons. He was an inspiration to me. I can still remember our first lesson, proper breathing and proper gesture, I couldn't understand the importance and use of those before because I was thinking that I can sing without those but Sir Ricky made me realize that those things are very important in singing. Those are the foundation of proper way singing. Singing seems easy but it wasn't but with the help of sir ricky i was able to show my skills. He asked us to write a diary every lesson for us to still remember everything that he taught to us. I am thankful to him because he helped me to develope my confidence and gave me an opportunity to sing wonderful pieces.

Professor Ricky is such an excellent and very approachable person. So far, he is the best vocal coach I've ever had when I was his music student. Based on my experience, I do have an idea regarding voice technique but I didn't expect that I can do more when he taught me the right way to sing classical for only just a few days of training. I recommend Sir Ricky as a voice coach. You're the best Sir!

Professor Ricky is an excellent, patient and a very passionate teacher! When I came to him as a student, I had zero knowledge of what classical singing is. I thought it would be very hard for me considering I am a total beginner. But after just a month of training having it only once a week, I was shocked, I can do vibratos already. His vocal exercises work! It was a wonderful experience having a teacher as qualified and trained as him. He has profound knowledge and understanding of the classical, pop, and musical theatre genre in music. He can read music very well which allows the student to better listen and connect with the musical piece. I think this is one of his edge compared to other vocal teachers out there. His strategies in teaching vocal techniques are relative to increasing breath support and control, and increasing vocal range. He has a vast range of experience when it comes to performance and recitals. He even made me sing on national parks and prestigious venues! He is a performer himself, and can relate to student’s difficulties addressing it and enhancing both the student’s knowledge and vocal ability. He makes sure that learning and vocal development take place every single day we had voice lessons. Professor Ricky’s techniques in teaching are both useful and helpful, urging me to be a better singer every single time. He really is one of a kind vocal teacher. I am inspired not just in learning the techniques in singing but also having music as a career. Very talented and highly recommended!

Best professor I've ever had. He depends his approach on your level of understanding and will never stop teaching you until you understand and master a topic. He pushes you to do your best and inspire you to do more. He will be forever one of my inspiration when I become a Music Teacher myself.
