I have experience teaching students of all ages (5 to 80), with a wide range of abilities and interests. I have prepared students who are interested to participate in recitals, festivals and to take exams such as those from the Toronto Conservatory of Music. One example of this is I tea h them to mark time with their feet and subdivide the best into qurters,eighths, etc... and then test them thru aural rhythmic dictation. For many of my beginning students who are children, I start with Faber's piano adventures. I use a mixture of method books, repetoire, and my own theory exercises until students can grasp solo repetoire. I also help students compose their own music, which we have fun doing! My approach to teaching is a logical one. The student needs to learn to "crawl', and then to 'walk" and then to run. Every lesson begins with vocal warm ups and breathing exercises, the importance of which can't be understated. Just as athletes wouldn't take the field without stretching, singers should never sing without giving their voice time to warm up. Warming up also serves as an excellent way for Jon to gauge student progress and make sure they are vocally healthy. After warm-ups, we move on to song study.
