Instruments: Cello
I am sensitive to the musical tastes of my students and try to cater to them. Most are very happy with Alwin Schroeder Foundation Studies, Carl Schroder Violoncello Method and the Suzuki Books. Others are also interested in folk or pop-Disney movie music, The Lord of the Rings, Beatles Songs, various ethnic music or personal favorites. It is a joyous moment when a student is ready to begin their study of the Bach Unaccompanied Cello Suites! Read More
Instruments: Piano Guitar
I am a mentor-style teacher. I love to see my students develop their love for music at their own pace, and I will do whatever it takes to help them achieve their goals. I feel that the music teacher/student relationship is something that can transcend music, and so I can be counted on for trustworthiness, reliability, punctuality, and honest encouragement. I also feel that it is critical that the music teacher themselves be a performing musician, and so I try to remain active with various performance projects involving piano and chamber music; this experience helps to benefit the student as well. His approach (and mine) combines the systematic technical discipline of the Russian violin school with the nurturing and personalized care for each individual student of the late pedagogue Dorothy DeLay. Instruments: Piano Voice Music
More important than vocal and piano technique, it is also important to me that my students have and continue to build a healthy strong self esteem. At times songs are chosen to help students feel more positive about themselves, and having healthy enlightening dialogue in the lyrics encouraging them not to give up, and believe in themselves and to dream the biggest dreams. When a student feels great about who they are, them performing great follows suit. Read More
Instruments: Piano Guitar Voice
I think voice especially has always been viewed as a bit of a mystery... you can't see or touch your voice as you sing, unlike playing instruments, so there's a certain amount of imagination that has to be involved. I do my best to straddle making singing as tangible as I can, and approach things somewhat scientifically ("This muscle is used in this way," etc.) while also inspiring visualization ("Send your sound out into the distance," etc.) I also really think it's important for musicians to be diverse, so not only will we learn chord and strumming patterns on a guitar, we'll also learn how to read simple lead lines of solos, etc. Read More
