Playing the piano is one of the biggest joys of my life, and I love to share that with as many people as possible. I gradauted in 2011 from Hyles-Anderson College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music Education with a minor in Piano Pedagogy. In the past, I have used several different band methods and generally like to first use the book that the students' school district is using. As the student becomes more accomplished, I supplement with method books and solo literature from the repertoire of the individual instrument. For the younger student, additionally, I like to work with improvising and making up his/her own songs, so that they enjoy and develop a sense of accomplishment in composing their own music. At the first lesson is just seeing where they are and what kind of music they would want to play(hymnal songs, gospel songs, soundtracks, opera, classical etc). Then at the beginning of each lesson would be theory(note recognition, counting, fingering etc). Then review on what they practiced for the week and if they are confident with the pieces add a few more songs. At Christmas time and the end of spring I like to have to have a recital for the students to play a few of the songs they learned for their friends and family.  Read More

 Music is a very physical thing as well as a very abstract thing.  In my lessons, there will be kennistetic learning through movement as well as teaching through sensation. Using tools like Solfege it helps create muscle memory and tuning. Piano students will learn a wealth of theory knowledge, correct posture and fingering patterns. My teaching experience has taught me that every student is different, and require different approaches. I have been teaching since the year 2000, where I have encouraged each student to practice. I also understand that learning piano can get repetitive therefore, my technique is to start with theory, and then to add playing by ear as well as reading the notes.
