The way I teach is about showing the student "the dance" of drums. The exercises and rudiments they practice are the movements in a dance. For example, with Punk drums the movements need to be mastered and played fast so the student will have to practice to get the movements up to speed instead of focusing on the beat. With Pop drums the movements need to be comfortable but precise as the student learns the importance of a metronome and how to relate to it by thinking of it as a member of the band. Read More

For beginning piano students I always like to start lessons with keyboard familiarity, vocabulary and recognition. we play games and use rhythm sticks and learn patterns and placement on the piano. I also start with finger placement and strengthening skills with repetitive Finger Phrases and John Thompson basic levels 1 through 3 songs. After assessing the student's age and experience we select a method book or repertoire. I typically suggest the Alfred books for young students. I aim to introduce my students to a variety of repertoire, (from baroque to modern music) but I also keep their goals and interests in mind. I consider music theory, ear training, music reading, and creative music-making just as essential as learning repertoire, therefore I strive to incorporate them in each lesson. Read More
