I am a music composer and vocalist who enjoys writing music that breaks harmonic and timbral conventions. I have spent the past 12 years of my life studying to become a better musician, performer, and composer. I love to use my knowledge and experience to teach the next generation of musicians and performers.
In 2016, I graduated from UC Berkeley with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Composition and Vocal Jazz Performance. In 2018, I graduated from New York University with a Masters of Music in Composition for Film and Visual Media. My projects include film scores, chamber and large ensemble compositions, musical theatre songwriting, choral music, and electroacoustic and intermedia projects. As a working composer, I have been given the opportunity to score short films that have entered the festival circuit, collaborating with directors internationally. I have worked with game designers on video game apps to score and design unique soundscapes. I was fortunately selected as a featured composer in the ASCAP Film Scoring Workshop in New York, hosted at Columbia University. My music has been performed my the New York University Symphony and members of the Prague Symphony. I am very passionate about music and am always looking to new ways to engage and share my passion of music!
My teaching experience began during my undergraduate career, as I was hired by the Music Department at UC Berkeley to work with non-major music students to tutor and assist them through their music theory and musicianship courses. While receiving my masters, I began teaching private lessons part time 2 years ago, and have been consistently working with students since. I specialize with young beginning to advanced students, teaching vocal technique and introductory keyboard skills. I believe that it is very important for any singer to have a music theory background, so I make sure to include in any of my vocal lessons basic keyboard knowledge. Further, I have found that it is important to incorporate all types of music in lessons. Learning all sorts of style in music is crucial to continue growing as a performer. Finally, it is important for a student to enjoy their lessons and find passion in their own music. I encourage them bringing and choosing music that they want to learn and/or begin writing their own original material. I'm always looking to work with new students of all ages! Let's Learn Together!
For beginning students, I focus on building a solid foundation of vocal technique (including: breath, resonance, posture, register, and diction). We build this foundation through singing pieces that the student is familiar with and lots of vocal exercises. At the same time, I like to introduce basic music theory concepts. I typically start with Alfred's Basic Piano Prep Course Theory. Upon grasping and understanding fundamentals, I will begin to introduce repertoire from different styles of music. For more advanced students, I try to focus on how they want to grow as a vocal performer to continue to master their ability. I strive to constantly challenge my students, while still keeping lessons fun and engaging!
I believe that it is truly important for any of my students to enjoy and love the music that they're practicing and learning. Therefore, it is important that I develop a specific teaching plan for each student. I encourage setting goals for each student to track progress and celebrate every accomplishment, making students eager to learn more. I encourage live performance, through either school talent shows, auditions, etc, because it is important for any vocalist to practice performing in front of an audience. I want to inspire my student to be the best musician that they can be!
