I am a pianist with a rich musical background and a passion for teaching. I began my piano studies at Sunhwa Arts Middle School and Sunhwa Arts High School in Seoul, South Korea. Continuing my journey at Hanyang University, I earned a Bachelor's degree in Piano. During my university years, I embarked on my teaching career, which has spanned over 20 years, even after immigrating to the United States. After assessing the student's age and experience we select a method book or repertoire. I typically suggest the Alfred books for young students. I aim to introduce my students to a variety of repertoire, (from baroque to modern music) but I also keep their goals and interests in mind. I consider music theory, ear training, music reading, and creative music-making just as essential as learning repertoire, therefore I strive to incorporate them in each lesson. Read More

For my younger to play games with them that teaches them the fundamentals of music theory while also having fun during the lesson. For my older students I like to see what gets them excited during the lesson and move forward accordingly. That can be extremely different from Student to Student but I do like to stay involved with the process and positive throughout. My approach is highly structured. We might start with warm-ups. This can mean, for example, Hanon exercises on the piano. Or playing scales on the guitar. I like to set tempos and practice rhythm as we run scales and chords. Sometimes I use a beat box. I believe in getting the client playing. I play only to demonstrate. I have continued to perform piano for various organizations and functions. I focus on development, and strive for students to enjoy learning piano through classical methods. In addition, I like to teach students basic methods through music that is interesting to the students. Because each student is unique, I am adaptable to the level, learning rate, and style that my students have. I want my students to learn music and find their own sense of accomplishment when they achieve a level or learn how to play a song that they chose. Read More
