Hi, my name is David R. I love teaching and getting students of all ages and experience levels interested in music and leveling up their skills! I'm a local Boston musician and recent graduate from the Berklee School of Music with a Bachelor of Music Cum Laude. As an active musician, I play over 100+ gigs a year in Boston and the New England area including festival dates, and play a variety of styles including Rock, Jazz, Pop, Country, Folk, Bluegrass, RnB, and Funk. I always emphasize musicality in my teaching, because if as performers, we are focusing on being expressive, we'll convey our love of music! If a student can think about what the music is expressing, they will be more motivated to keep practicing. I focus on the fundamentals such as tone, rhythm, dynamics, timbre, basic music theory and history. I always give specific positive feedback, along with a tip for improvement. Finally, I always go over how, how much, and what to practice in lessons, so the student can learn what to listen for and focus on outside of the lesson, and keep improving during the week. Read More

I've started teaching way back before I got into Berklee College of Music, when I was already teaching my younger brother who was 4-5 at that time. Then when I started teaching was about 4 years ago. I never realized how much both the teacher and the student could learn at the same time, not only I learnt how to teach people better, but I also kind of learnt music in different ways by teaching it in different ways to different students. Each student learns at his or her own pace, and as a result I dislike forcing all students into the same step-by-step regimen. I find that laying out preplanned expectations and milestones at the outset is often more for the teachers benefit than the students. Individualizing lesson plans and progress trajectories is much more work on my end, but I find the result much more rewarding for both instructor and student. Read More

These degrees may not seem to add much to my musical background, but their very training solidifies my persistence in logical training, something much required in the study of music. In my spare time, a good friend and I have prepared podcasts on guiding classical music appreciation to a deeper level than simple song recognition. I used to arrange for and coach an acapella group based in New York. I also compose recreationally and transcribe piano music into symphonic expansions. Read More

For beginning students, I typically start with Hanon exercises to improve manual strength and dexterity. At the same time, these exercises can help students to learn to sightread, and I will give an additional lecture on musical notation with written material for reference at no charge if necessary. After one or two weeks, I usually assign simple Bach pieces or appropriate solo repertoires to experience music right under their fingertips. Read More
Instruments: Piano Violin Viola
I teach students of all levels including adult students. I am a traditional teacher in that I focus on laying a secure foundation to prevent any unnatural habits from blocking the students progress in the future and helping the student become completely independent of the teacher. The student learns the skills necessary to teach themselves. I use a structured approach that involves a set of criteria that the student memorizes and is able to use as a checklist of issues to watch out for when practicing. Read More
