For beginning brass players, my favorite method for individual instruction in the "Breeze Easy" method, by John Kinyon. These books have fun and engaging entry-level pieces for students to play. Once students have gone through each book and developed certain fundamental skills, I will encourage them to move on to more advanced books such as the Arban's "Complete Method", and Robert Getchell's "2nd Book of Practical Studies". Arban's has a great combination of fundamental exercises such as scale studies and vocalizes, but also has entertaining solos and duets toward the back of the book. Read More

I use the "CAGED" system on guitar as a way to navigate the fretboard and understand the patterns on Guitar. I always put a strong emphasis on being able to learn a song by ear and understand the theory behind it. For younger children I use the Hal Leonard Method book to give them the ability to read Music. I teach all styles and advanced lessons including Ear training, Theory, Chord Building, Modes, Scales, and Technique. Read More

For beginning students, I typically start with Suzuki Book 1. A strong foundation is key to playing the violin/viola. I do teach the Suzuki method, but I understand that method of teaching does not work for all students--one size does not fit all. I believe all students have the innate ability to learn an instrument despite their background. I find the Suzuki books provide a strong foundation with the ability to play full songs from the start.
