At the Berklee Day Sessions Summer Program in 2011, I played in and directed ensembles of musicians aged 10-13. For beginning students on guitar i typically start wih Hal Leonards book 1. With about 50 pages in this book, we can go thru at a steady pace and be playing songs from the beginning. Makeing music from the very beginning is the key ! Even the simple one line practice exercizes i back up with a harmonic chordal accompaniment for a satisfying duet. I encorage them by setting realistic goals and by reinforcing the improtance of individual study practice.
